Sustainability

Designed with care for the people and the planet
OUR SUSTAINABILITY STATEMENT
At Sian, we create sustainable modules that are as mindful of the planet as they are of the people who inhabit them. Our approach is based on a strong environmental ethic, aiming to preserve our planet through our building practices, foster a socially connected community, and maintain transparency in our governance.

Our modules are crafted using sustainable materials designed to last and positively impact their environment. We ensure every module we create is resource-efficient and eco-friendly, balancing modern living with environmental stewardship. Our approach includes energy efficiency, water conservation, superior indoor air quality, waste reduction, and modular construction among others.

Our dedication to the environment extends beyond our construction practices. We actively support and collaborate with companies committed to sustainable projects. By creating modules that preserve biodiversity, we aim to make a positive impact on our planet.

As a committed company, we prioritize the development of a dedicated local workforce. We actively promote local economies by integrating locally sourced materials and services into our production chain, including craftsmanship, furniture, finishes, and materials. We seek partnerships with businesses that share our commitment to ethical and sustainable production.

We believe in openness and accountability. As we move towards becoming a B Corp, we are dedicated to maintaining transparency in our governance model, ensuring that our processes meet the highest standards of social and environmental performance.

Energy Efficiency

  • Incorporation of energy-efficient light bulbs and appliances with high energy ratings.
  • Utilization of passive solar and biophilic design principles.
  • High-level insulation on roofs, walls, and floors.
  • Double-glazed windows to minimize energy loss and gain
  • Featuring air chambers in modules for active thermal regulation.
  • Adding terrace covers to prevent direct sunlight from entering the interior.
  • Designing suites with high ceilings to facilitate airflow

Optional

  • Possibility of including an electricity usage meter to monitor energy consumption and CO2 emissions.
  • Possibility of incorporation of an integrated solar energy system
  • Installation of an electric vehicle charging station.

Water Efficiency

  • Installation of water tanks starting from 2100 liters to conserve water and eliminate reliance on mains water.
  • Reduced water consumption in construction compared to traditional processes.
  • Efficient environmental management of wastewater.
  • Reduction of stormwater runoff.
  • Water-saving strategies such as low-flow faucets and showers, and dual-flush toilets.
  • Optional: Possibility of including a rainwater harvesting system.

Air Quality

  • We ensure the use of low VOC paints, varnishes, wood treatments, and wood products.
  • We strategically place windows for optimal air quality and cross ventilation.
  • Our interior finishes feature Viroc panels, a non-toxic, durable material made from recycled wood and cement.
  • Apart from wood, we use natural fibers for interior finishes, handcrafted by local artisan communities.
  • Our flooring is made from regional wood, reducing transportation costs and supporting the local economy.

Materials and sustainable finishings

  • We use eco-friendly construction practices and sustainable, energy-efficient materials.
  • We source sustainable plantation wood, preferably, when possible, of local origin.
  • We offer sustainable exterior cladding products known for their durability and low maintenance.
  • Our countertops are made from wood fiber from sustainable forests and reclaimed materials.
  • We adhere to strict environmental and social standards for our carpentry materials.
  • Our double-glazed windows have a five-star rating from the Window Energy Rating System.
  • We minimize waste during the construction process.
  • We design exterior and interior spaces separately to facilitate maintenance and possible replacement due to extreme environmental deterioration.
  • We recycle excess construction materials whenever possible.
  • Our wood coating leaves an “open pore” finish, allowing the wood to breathe, regulate humidity, and facilitate moisture release.

Ecosystem and biodiversity protection

  • Our low-impact foundation system uses pilings, limiting excavation and earth movement.
  • We create specific spaces that protect local fauna and biodiversity.
  • Our architecture is designed to harmonize with the natural, cultural, and social environment, creating minimal visual impact and using vernacular design strategies (such as palm-thatched roofs in tropical areas, regional woods, and gabled roofs).

Modular Architecture

  • Our constructions adapt to the needs of occupants, growing as families grow and changing according to life’s various stages.
  • We avoid the use of heavy machinery.
  • Our construction times are significantly reduced due to our efficient modular design.

Waste Management

  • The compact design of each module minimizes wasted space, resources, and costs.
  • We use standardized panel sizes, reducing waste.
  • We recycle excess construction materials whenever possible.
  • We adhere to strict on-site guidelines to minimize waste and environmental disruption during delivery.
  • Our modular structure facilitates assembly and disassembly without the need for special machinery or tools.
  • Both the interior and exterior are designed in sections that can be easily assembled and disassembled, allowing the module to grow or shrink as needed.
  • We use clip or screw connections that enable easy disassembly and subsequent reuse.
